Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that develops after an individual experiences or witnesses extreme life-altering events such as accidents, physical assaults, rape, natural disasters, tragic death, and war.  The American Psychiatric Association (2013) estimated approximately 60% of men and 50% of women live through at least one traumatic event. Most people will be able to mentally recover with time and good self-care.  However, many survivors will become trapped in a vicious cycle of intrusive memories and unable to move past the horrific event. The symptoms can vary from person to person and over time.  Nightmares, flashbacks, detachment from others, insomnia, and lack of motivation are common symptoms that leave survivors feeling hopeless. The good news is there is help and “HOPE”.
